All-Porcelain

In recent years, new types of porcelain have been developed which allow crowns and bridges to be fabricated completely out of porcelain. Until recently, porcelain substructures were simply not strong enough to withstand the heavy forces produced by the masticatory system. Newer porcelains are strong enough to be used anywhere in the mouth, but are especially attractive in the anterior (front teeth.) All-porcelain restorations have a much more life-like appearance, as they can appear more translucent than PFM restorations. The drawback to all-porcelain restorations is that they typically require the removal of additional amounts of tooth structure to allow for the thickness of porcelain necessary to maintain the strength of the restoration. All-porcelain crowns, some bridges, inlays and onlays are available.
