Extractions
While her goal is to save every tooth that she can, Dr. Last understands that sometimes the battle for a tooth may be lost, and in that case she is highly capable of performing dental extractions.
There are typically two types of extractions that Dr. Last may perform: non-surgical and surgical. During a non-surgical extraction, the tooth and root are gently lifted from the socket using alternating pressure and lifting. Non-surgical extractions are usually atraumatic and do not result in a significant amount of pain after the procedure.
During a surgical extraction, bone from around the tooth must be removed to allow for the roots to be lifted out. Usually, a surgical extraction will result in the placement of sutures to close the site. Also, surgical extractions are likely to produce more discomfort than non-surgical extractions. Dr. Last is very cognizant of the psychological effects associated with dental pain and will happily develop a pain management schedule for any patient experiencing discomfort. Most often, Dr. last will inform you which type of extraction will be required; however, occasionally there are complications during a routine extraction and a surgical extraction may be necessary.
