Gold

Traditionally, all restorations were fabricated completely out of gold. Gold is an outstanding restorative material, and will almost always last longer than any other type of restoration. Dr. Last enjoys creating gold restorations because she is able to be more conservative in removing natural tooth structure. Furthermore, she has seen gold restorations that have lasted as long as 50 years! Gold has an incredible malleabililty, which helps seal margins, reducing possibility for leakage. Additionally, gold wears very well, as opposed to porcelain, which is capable of fracture. Gold is kinder to enamel than porcelain. In cases where natural tooth is grinding against porcelain, the enamel will always wear away first, which compromises the natural tooth. When a natural tooth grinds against gold, the gold will wear first and also will not fracture. Most people do not find gold as esthetically appealing as porcelain; however, if you are concerned about restoring a tooth for the longest possible amount of time, then a gold restoration may be right for you. Gold crowns, bridges, inlays and onlays are all available.
