Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)
A PFM restoration consists of a metal substrate, usually some type of gold alloy that is fused to a porcelain shell by firing at a very high temperature. Most porcelain crowns, which have been placed in the past 40 years are of this type of fabrication. PFM restorations have the advantage of a strong metal substructure, combined with the enhanced esthetics of porcelain. Sometimes, a thin line of metal running along the gumline may be seen at the bottom of these types of restorations. PFM crowns and bridges are available. Inlays and onlays are typically not fabricated in the PFM style.
