What is a Crown?
A crown, or cap, is a gold or porcelain shell that is placed over an existing tooth, which has been specially prepared. A tooth may need a crown because it is fractured or because it visually has cracks that indicate it may fracture in the future. A tooth may also require a crown if a significant portion of the tooth has been lost due to decay (cavities) or if the tooth has had root canal therapy. It is very important to crown most teeth after they have undergone root canal therapy because they are more prone to breakage.
